But here's the catch: to unlock its full potential, you'll need an RTX 50 Series graphics card.
The ROG Strix XG27JCG is a beast of a monitor, boasting a 27-inch IPS panel that delivers ultra-sharp visuals at an astonishing 5120x2880 resolution. It's a true gamer's dream, offering a dual-mode refresh feature that allows it to reach an incredible 330Hz at QHD resolution. However, the 5K 180Hz mode has a specific requirement: an RTX 50 Series graphics card.
Asus has specifically stated that this monitor is designed to work seamlessly with the RTX 50 Series, which suggests that there might be some limitations or incompatibility issues with older graphics cards. It could be due to video output bandwidth constraints or the lack of support for Display Stream Compression and Fixed Rate Link technologies by older cards.
The monitor's connectivity options, including HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB Type-C with DP Alt Mode, are the same as those found on RTX 40 Series cards. This leads us to believe that the issue lies in how the video compression is negotiated between the display and the GPU. Interestingly, this restriction only applies to the 5K 180Hz mode, meaning you can still enjoy the QHD 330Hz mode with older graphics cards.
While the RTX 50 Series is required for the full 180Hz experience, it's worth noting that lower refresh rates might still be achievable with older cards. For instance, connecting a 360Hz 1440p monitor via HDMI 2.0 limits its speed to 240Hz, but it still functions properly. Unless there's a firmware incompatibility or a specific design choice, you should be able to enjoy the XG27JCG's impressive 218 PPI pixel density, albeit at a lower refresh rate.
