A heartbreaking revelation has emerged from the legendary Springbok, Bryan Habana. In a recent podcast interview, he shared that his father's betrayal has left an indelible mark on their relationship.
The Betrayal of Trust
Habana, a record-breaking try-scorer for South Africa, opened up about the breakdown of trust with his father, who had been managing his finances since a young age.
"Trust is a delicate matter, and it's not always easy to navigate, especially when you're young. Who do you trust? Your parents? Your family? A lawyer?" Habana questioned.
He went on to explain how his trust was misplaced, and how he unfortunately lost a significant amount of money due to the mismanagement of his funds by someone he thought he could rely on - his own father.
The Suspicion Arises
Habana's now-wife, Janine Viljoen, was one of the first to suspect something was amiss. When they began their journey together, she asked about his financial management, a question that left Habana puzzled.
"I had always trusted my dad to handle these matters, but Janine's concern made me question if I was doing the right thing," he said.
The Wedding and the Switch
The situation came to a head when Habana and Janine got married in 2009. The former wing star became increasingly suspicious of his father's actions, especially when it came to planning their wedding.
"I wanted a quiet, intimate wedding, but my dad insisted it should be a public affair, comparing us to Will and Kate. It was a battle of wills, and ultimately, my dad took control, turning our special day into a chaotic mess," Habana recalled.
This period also coincided with Habana's high-profile move from the Bulls to the Stormers, adding to the stress and sadness he and Janine were experiencing behind the scenes.
The Tipping Point
But here's where it gets controversial... Habana's father was managing all his commercial deals, and when it came time to put down a deposit on their dream home in Cape Town, the money wasn't forthcoming.
"I needed to access my savings, but the more I asked, the more the money seemed to disappear. It was at this point that I realized something was seriously wrong," Habana explained.
The Final Straw
In early 2010, Habana finally uncovered the full extent of his father's actions. He discovered that his father had been negotiating and signing contracts on his behalf, without his knowledge or consent.
"I sent out an email to all my sponsors, nullifying any negotiations or contracts handled by my dad up until that point. It was then that I learned the truth - the Bryan Habana Trust, which I thought was receiving all my commercial earnings, was actually my dad's personal bank account," he revealed.
The Aftermath
Despite being South Africa's highest-paid player at the time, Habana could not forgive his father for this betrayal.
"I was living comfortably, but the world saw only the facade of a perfect father-son relationship. The truth was, my dad had taken advantage of my trust, and in doing so, destroyed any chance of a relationship between us," he said.
And this is the part most people miss... Habana's father denied everything when confronted with the facts, and the money was gone.
"I didn't receive a single cent from the Gillette sponsorship, and to add insult to injury, I had to pay tax on that money I never received," Habana shared.
